During the pandemic, some of us started using delivery services for groceries. Besides, there aren’t many of us who prefer spending our free timegrocery shopping, especially after a long day at work. So, due to the changes in our behavior, traditional stores have fewer customers. That’s why Walmart auctioned off items from its closed stores.
What is the future of supermarkets?
Some of the traditional retailers moved to the online shopping platforms. After all, they cost less because they don’t have to pay rent, utilities, and staff. Also, some of them are using both traditional and online stores. Yet, some retailers didn’t adapt to the omnichannel approach. However, they might do it soon.
Many retailers need to reevaluate their business models. In addition, after closing their shops, they were left with many products and tools. That’s one of the reasons why Walmart auctioned various items from its stores.
Is Walmart closing stores in 2024 in the USA?
Walmart’s online operations are going well. Yet, some of its physical stores are not generating profits. So, the brand closed 24 stores in 2023. According toTheStreet, this decision affected 14 states and Washington, D.C. Also, the retailer is closing eight additional stores in 2024.
In addition, Walmart will close its health centers and terminate its health division because they are not a sustainable business model. On top of that, the retailer might focus more on grocerye-commerce, especially since it has a growing online marketplace and competes with Amazon.
Walmart announced in October that it would shut down one of its stores in Columbus, Ohio. The retailer took this decision because the store did not meet financial expectations. However, its associates have the option to move to other locations. Also, they received severance payments.
