Microsoft has once more come to the public’s attention because of cybersecurity violations.According to reports, this time, the tech giant shared that an organization of hackers in Russia calledMidnight Blizzardcould see inside email accounts belonging to a few high-ranking Microsoft managers.
Additionally, this isn’t Microsoft’s first encounter with uninvited digital trespassers. At the start of this year, they dealt with a situation in whichChinese hackers targeted Outlook-based government emailaccounts in the United States and Europe.
This week we are continuing notifications to customers who corresponded with Microsoft corporate email accounts that were exfiltrated by the Midnight Blizzard threat actor.
Microsoft has reacted quickly and determinedly to the breaches inflicted by Midnight Blizzard. They’ve initiated the Secure Future Initiative program, which focuses on enhancing their cybersecurity abilities. The company is evidently treating these occurrences with great seriousness, as security has now been declared its highest concern.
They are not only making promises. Microsoft President Brad Smith traveled to Washington, D.C., and discussed these security breaches with the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security. It appears they are doing everything possible to prevent a repeat occurrence of this situation.
It’s well known that Microsoft has been doing everything to deal with the constant cybersecurity attacks on the company: from the Redmond-based tech giant requiringemployees to become knowledgeable in cybersecurityif they want raises to the company constantly releasing Patch Tuesday updates with fixes for critical vulnerabilities, Microsoft is on constant fire.
However, these incidents act as an alarm clock for everyone. Cybersecurity is not just a trendy phrase or the worry of IT sections. It is a very important part of our digital lives, requiring us to be watchful, knowledgeable, and, at times, careful.
So, when receiving a new email from Outlook, maybe inspect it before opening it immediately. Check the sender, see if it has attachments, and check out any sign of unusual identity, from the email to the name of the sender and potential bits of foreign language. It can be a lifesaver.
