How would you like a laptop with a 100-inch screen? No, we’re not talking about connecting your laptop to a video projector, or a physical screen. This story is about the new Spacetop G1, an AR laptop which might set a new hardware trend if it takes off.

Sightful, the start-up behind this new device demonstrated their Spacetop G1 AR laptop last year to a hand-picked tech experts crowd and now, the device is available for preorder.

What is all about the Spacetop G1 AR laptop?

As you probably figured out by now, Spacetop G1 is a laptop that replaces the physical display with AR glasses and a virtual screen of up to 100 inches. This way, the images won’t obstruct the reality around you, and you will have absolute privacy.

By ditching the display, the device becomes even more slim and portable, having just 3.08 pounds. Otherwise, its built like a regular laptop, with a 79-key keyboard and a multi-gesture trackpad, a Snapdragon QCS8550 SoC featuring an Adreno 740 GPU, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, and 5G connectivity through a eSIM and Nano-SIM slot.

So, we can talk more about the screen, or more precisely the image you will see. The glasses show the image by using two Full HD (1.080p) OLED displays with 90 Hz refresh rate that will simulate a screen of up to 100 inches.

There are also some downsides to this system. For instance, it’s powered by the company’sSpaceOS, which, from what we can tell, it can run only web apps:

SpaceOS is built for the modern Web, so anything you do on the Web, you can now do – in space.

Another caveat is that the glasses are connected with the actual laptop with a cable. We get that it’s the best way to ensure seamless video and audio connections (for the microphone), but after a few hours of work, that cable will probably become a nuisance.

We don’t know yet if the experience is the same as the pretty images show it, but ultimately, that’s going to decide whether the Spacetop G1 AR laptop succeeds or not.
