SharePoint will introduce a Site ownership policy later this year, starting in October 2024. This policy will see the platform provide a one-stop solution to effectively manage the ownership needs of all SharePoint sites in a tenancy.

According to the latest entry in the Microsoft 365 Roadmap, the new site ownership policy will help users define their organizations’ ownership criteria and identify sites that are no longer compliant.

The policy allows admins to notify selected users to find the next best site owner or admin, thus ensuring the site’s safety.

Here’s whatthe entry says:

Site ownership policy is a one-stop solution to effectively manage ownership needs of all SharePoint sites in your tenant. It helps you to define your organization’s ownership criteria and identify sites that are not compliant. You can further notify predefined set of users of your choice to find the next best site owner or admin. You can also choose to automate actions on sites that remain ownerless for more than 3 months to prevent risks of data mismanagement.

This enhancement is part of a larger set of improvements for SharePoint. For instance, earlier this summer, the Redmond-based tech giant announced thata content pane, a central hub for organization-related news and content, would be gradually released to the platform in September.
