In a major development in the memory market, Samsung has started the mass production of9th-generation V-NAND(Vertical NAND)this month, i.e.,April’24. It delivers a50%improvement in bit density over the previous generation and comes equipped with theChannel Hole Etchingtechnology.

According to theofficial press release, the new generation ofV-NANDis more effective, reliable, and long-lasting, given the application of recent innovations like cell interference avoidance and cell life extension.

The9th-generation V-NANDconsumes 10% less power, making it an ideal solution for years to come as concerns regarding carbon emissions are on the rise.

On the release of the9th-generation V-NAND, SungHoi Hur from Samsung Electronics said,

With a new NAND-flash interface,Toggle 5.1, the9th-generation V-NANDimproves the data input/output to 3.2 Gbps, a33%increase over the previous generation.

Samsung beginning the mass production of the9th-generation V-NANDcomes at the heels ofArtificial Intelligence(AI)gaining prominenceand findingintegration in a wide array of tasks. And with the latest innovation, Samsung aims to create an AI-oriented solution!

It will also be interesting to watch how the9th-generation V-NANDaffects the cost factor, asSSD and HDD prices have increased recently.

The South Korea-based tech giant is also expected to begin production of the QLC(Quad-level Cell)model by the second half of2024.
