After Western Digital surprised everyone with a4TB SD card, it’s Samsung’s turn to amaze us with new LPDDR5X memory modules touted as 25% faster than the previous versions.

According to Samsung’s press release, the new modules have 30% more capacity and will reach a 10.7 Gbps throughput.

Not only that, but Samsung used the 12 nm architecture for the chip and they say that it’s the smallest among existing LPDDRs. The fact that they’re smaller means that they are higher density and you could eventually see them in 32 GB memory modules.

The new LPDDR5X modules are great for AI

Micron and SK Hynix already have 8.5 Gbps LPDDR5 modules so that makes the Samsung LPDDR5X the fastest right now.

The only issue is that the Coreean manufacturer will put the new modules into production the second half of the year, so you won’t see them very soon into laptops and smartphones.

Samsung also thinks that the new memory modules will be great for AI applications that require intensive processing:

Samsung’s 10.7Gbps LPDDR5X not only improves performance by more than 25% and capacity by more than 30%, compared to the previous generation, but also expands the single package capacity of mobile DRAM up to 32-gigabytes (GB), making it an optimal solution for the on-device AI era that requires high-performance, high-capacity and low-power memory.

So, actually, the new LPDDR5X memory modules don’t have any other special features for theAI PC or laptop, but they are more powerful so they will help you better for AI-related tasks.

While this is great for the future laptops, it will be more exciting to see them in the next smartphones from Samsung, but also from Xiaomi and Oppo who usually use the Samsung chips. 32GB RAM on a smartphone will really break the power limits for the portable in our pockets.
