Microsoft is making some big changes to the OneDrive shared folders experience. According to the latest entry in the Microsoft 365 Roadmap, the platform will change this experience to allow users to access shared folders from within their own OneDrive.

As Microsoft says, currently, when someone is accessing shared folders, OneDrive takes them to those folders from within the sharers’ OneDrive.

With this change, however, the shared folders will be accessible from the People tab within OneDrive, to streamline the whole experience, without having to access foreign OneDrive domains.

We’re making a change to the shared folder experience in OneDrive. Currently, when a user opens a shared folder in OneDrive, they are taken to a view of that folder within the sharers OneDrive. In the new experience, opening a shared folder will take the user to the shared folder within the People view of their own OneDrive. This view, organized by people, shows and allows access to all the files and folders that have been shared with the user.

In other words, the new shared folders experience on OneDrive will be faster, intuitive, and will allow users quick access to important files, without having to worry about stepping into unknown territory.

Aside from this, OneDrive users should expect a plethora of new capabilities coming to the platform in the following weeks. We’re talking about an enhanced File Viewer, AI capabilities, enhanced productivity and collaboration, and even branding capabilities that organizations can use to design personalized landing pages featuring the brand logo.

OneDrive will also introduce colors to folders so that users can easily tell the difference between cloud-based folders and local ones.

Plus, a new Media View will display all the media files on the homepage, including video, audio, and images. However, there areso many other featurescoming to the platform, that it’s hard to keep count.

It’s no wonder that Microsoft wants to streamline OneDrive’s shared folder experience. By the way, the new experience will be released in June.
