In the quest for higher resolutions and smoother frame rates, Microsoft has unveiled a groundbreaking solution, DirectSR that can revolutionize the gaming experience by seamlessly integrating super-resolution (SR) technologies across different GPU hardware vendors.

Developed in collaboration with DirectSR AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA, DirectSR focuses on setting a new standard for SR support in D3D12. This APIseamlessly leverages the capabilities of their in-market upscaling technologies

Microsoft said:

DirectSR enables multi-vendor SR through a common set of inputs and outputs, allowing a single code path to exercise DLSS Super Resolution, FidelityFX™ Super Resolution, and XeSS. By exposing these technologies under one interface, SR integration becomes straightforward and scalable – developers can implement once and ship SR across the broad landscape of Windows devices!

DirectSR eliminates the need for developers to juggle multiple vendor-specific SDKs or libraries by simplifying the integration process.

Furthermore, the API provides inbuilt support for AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution (FSR) 2.2 and driver-level support for Intel XeSS and NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution. This ensures that the DirectSR can adapt to various hardware configurations while maintaining gamers’ performance and quality demands.

Andrej Zdravkovic, Senior Vice President of GPU Technologies and Engineering Software, and Chief Software Officer at AMD said:

“It was a pleasure to collaborate with Microsoft on the design and development of DirectSR as a way to unify developer access to super resolution technologies across all platforms. We are excited to have AMD FSR 2.2 delivered as a built-in implementation in DirectSR as part of this preview release.

Jason Paul, Vice President, GeForce Platform Marketing at NVIDIA said:

NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution is available in over 400 titles and has become a standard feature for gamers. We are excited to give developers even more ways to bring DLSS to the next generation of games

Alexander Kharlamov, Senior Director, Intel GPU Rendering said:

Intel strongly endorses Microsoft’s DirectSR specification, and the collaborative efforts involved in its creation – it simplifies the lives of game developers and ensures more gamers will experience Intel’s XeSS up-scaling technology on Intel GPUs.

The introduction of DirectSR looks promising, as it can seamlessly integrate SR technologies from different vendors and potentially elevate the gaming experience for all.

Moreover, the developer can use this API to deliver smooth performance with stunning visuals on various hardware configurations.

You can use DirectSR via theAgility SDK 1.714.0-previewrelease with drivers supporting XeSS and DLSS available fromIntelandNVIDIA, respectively
