Allegedly, MediaTek is getting ready to join the group of Windows on ARM devices. This possible action might change how things are now because most of this area has been led by Qualcomm processors and somewhat by Macs powered with Apple Silicon through virtualization software.
Reuters, citing undisclosed sources, writes that MediaTek’s entry into this arena isn’t just a passing idea but an organized plan hoping for release during the second half of 2025. This might be the start of a fresh period for competition and creativity within the ARM-based Windows PC sector.
Why is this an important development for Copilot+ PC?
For people watching the Windows on Arm path closely, it wasn’t a secret that Qualcomm had an exclusivity deal to deliver Arm chips for Windows computers. But as that period will end next year, MediaTek could enter with its own Arm chip made for Copilot+ PCs. This would be based on the designs of ARM already present in other devices. It’s likely that this situation might make things easier during development time at MediaTek; however we don’t yet know if these processors will become part of Copilot+ PC program or not.
MediaTek’s entrance in this market is significant for two reasons. It could bring more variety to the kinds of chips used in today’s Windows computers, which have mainly included those made by AMD and Intel with Qualcomm as only option for ARM type processing power up until now. If we see MediaTek join alongside them – or possibly Nvidia and AMD too later on – it might greatly change things around giving people greater selection possibilities. Arm’s prediction of getting50% of the PC market in 5 yearssounds a little more plausible now.
However, even though there aren’t many Copilot+ PCs available right now, the future seems hopeful with more devices and form factors coming in. Microsoft and MediaTek have remained silent, not offering any comments about these changes, but a lot of things can happen in a year.
