Google brings two new AI tools for coding, Gemini Code Assist and CodeGemma, based on Gemini and GemaAI models. The first one can help you code in many programming languages. The second one has fewer programming languages, but it can run locally. So, it is better for office work.

Gemini Code Assistcan write code in 22 programming languages like C, C++, MatLab, Ruby, Rust, Javascript, Python, and SQL. Additionally, it can answer your questions about the Google Cloud. In addition, it can debug existing code. Also, it can explain code so you can learn it faster. Unfortunately, this AI tool for coding is part of theGemini for Google Cloudoffering. Thus, it is not currently available as a standalone tool.

CodeGemmahas fewer programming languages compared to Gemini Code Assist. In addition, it can generate code in Python, Javascript, and Java and complete existing code lines. Google made three variants of this AI tool for coding.

The first CodeGemma model is the 7B pretrained variant, made for code generation from prefixes and suffixes and code completion. The second model is the 7B instruction-tuned variant designed for following instructions and natural language-to-code chat. The last model is the 2B pretrained variant that helps you complete code x2 faster. On top of that, you can run it on your device while being offline.

According to Google, the CodeGemma AI coding tool should help you reduce the repetitive code you have to create. Also, the company trained the models on 500 billion tokens of data. Yet, you can only access the 7B CodeGemma models using Nvidia’s Chat with RTX or Opera One’s browser developer version.

Previously, Google tried to offer us an AI tool for coding and various other tasks known asDuet AI. However, it rebranded into Google Business and Enterprise. So, the two new additions should replace it. Yet, it will take some time until Gemini Code Assist will compete withCopilot for GitHub. After all, Microsoft offers it as a standalone AI assistant. By the way, if you are looking for another engineering software, checkDevin.

Ultimately, the new AI tools for coding from Google could help developers work faster. Also, the CodeGemma 2B will be a great tool since it works offline. So, it might be safer than its online counterparts. Hopefully, the new AI tools won’t hallucinate like the image generator, especially since this issue concerns some users.

What’s on your mind? Are you going to get the CodeGemma or Gemini Code Assist? Let us know in the comments.
