When it comes to PCs, things are ever-evolving. Newer, better technologies are rendering certain components redundant. This also leads to confusion, especially when it comes to CPUs and microprocessors, two critical components of the PC!
The two terms, CPU and microprocessor, are often used interchangeably, but at the core, they are different from one another. Neither all CPUs are microprocessors, nor all microprocessors are CPUs, no matter what others tell you.
What are the differences between CPU and microprocessor?
Remember, a microprocessor (in most cases) features a CPU. It’s just a miniaturized form of the latter that fits into a single silicon chip. Similarly, a microprocessor may also feature aGPU (Graphics Processing Unit)for rendering images and processing graphics.
Are microprocessors an advancement in CPUs over the years?
Microprocessors integrate the CPU and other key components and circuits into a single chip, reducing the size and increasing the efficiency. So, yes, they are an improvement over traditional CPUs, achieved in the last few decades.
These are the basic differences between a CPU and a microprocessor. Major manufacturers of microprocessors today include Intel and AMD, amongst other smaller players!
