Geoff Keighley’s tweet about the Gears of War: E-Day trailer stirred up a recent storm in gaming news.

It is interesting to see how one tweet can start such an argument. Keighley, who has given much to gaming events, just expressed his opinions onhow the trailer was made. He said CGI was made from in-game assets using Unreal Engine 5 technology. Little did he know this would create a chain reaction among fans.

The great Gears of War piece was a CG from Blur Studio, using in-game assets from UE5.Game info: Gears of War: E-Day is the next mainline game in the Gears of War universe, set during the pivotal Emergence Day. Fourteen years before Gears of War, war heroes Marcus Fenix and Dom…

The main point of disagreement centered around the difference between “CG” and “in-engine footage,” a distinction that might appear small but turned into a warzone for console fans. Keighley’s comment was viewed by certain people as devaluing the effort put in by developers, an outlook that rapidly gained ground on the internet.

The debate spiraled, necessitating an explanation from Xbox’s marketing director, Guy Welch. Welch clarified how the trailer was made but didn’t completely remove uncertainty.

Finally, Microsoft came forward to clarify the situation and back Keighley by saying that the trailer was truly made using Unreal Engine 5 but not in real time—a small but crucial difference.

This incident underlines the continuous rivalry between gaming consoles, with Keighley getting entangled, sadly so, due to assumed loyalties. It’s an instance that reminds us of how passionate and at times too enthusiastic gaming followers can be.

In another area, YouTuber Plainrock124 criticized Geoff Keighley’s declaration about the Summer Game Fest 2025 for not making what they considered a strong impact on the industry.

The critique mentioned its “mid-show and overpriced ad spots,” stirring up a wider discussion about how gaming showcases are now. Although there were some good parts, people generally didn’t react that much to the 2024 Summer Game Fest. They wanted it to be more like how E3 used to be—with big effects and important news.

Glad you liked it!Blur developed the trailer hand-in-hand with our team@CoalitionGearsusing@UnrealEngine5. The trailer is developed with in-game models, textures, environments and props that players will see in the final game. This follows the same method that we used for…

The gaming world faces a difficult junction, with layoffs, studio closures, and a perceived dip in game quality causing worry. Even events like the Summer Game Fest are being questioned about their role in this ecosystem—do they help or just add to the difficulties?

As we consider forthcoming gaming events, we hope there will be more focus on creativity and innovation—elements that have always pushed the best of gaming forward. Until then, did you like the new Gears of War E-Day trailer?
