When it comes to CPUs, AMD and Intel dominate the market. The competition between the two is fierce. If a report suggests that one is taking a lead, the other quickly gains back the lost numbers in the next quarter. And in Q1 2024, AMD gained a higher share in the CPU market compared to Intel!

According to areport inTom’s Hardwarebased on the data shared byMercury Research, AMD gained both revenue and unit market share inQ1 2024.AMD attributes this gain to the increased demand for4th Gen EPYCandRyzen 8000 seriesprocessors.

Excerpts from AMD’s statement reads,

According to the data fromMercury Research, AMD’s server unit and revenue share increased by 0.5% and 1.2% in the last quarter. Looking at the year-on-year(Y/Y)numbers, the gain was 5.6% and 5.2% for the unit and revenue share, respectively.

A similar pattern was observed across desktop devices, where AMD’s unit share increased by4.1%in the last quarter and4.7%in the last year. As for the revenue share, the gain was3.3%for the quarter and3.8%for the year.

The figures for mobile CPUs should be a concern for AMD. At a time when it’s gaining at the expense of Intel in desktop devices and servers, mobile’s quarterly unit and revenue share fell by1.0%and0.1%, respectively. Experts attribute this to the popularity of arch-rivalIntel’s Meteor Lake processor.

This loss in market share also affected AMD’s YoY figures for the mobile segment, which only increased by3.1%for unit share and4.0%for revenue share.

The results are in line with what was expected. We previously reported that when it comes to AI,AMD Ryzen surpasses Intel Meteor Lake’s performance. And the former is cheaper as well. So that must have played in AMD’s favour!

We will have to wait for next quarter’s results to gain more perspective on how the market is responding to the chips unveiled by AMD and Intel.

Who do you think will ultimately have a higher CPU market share, AMD or Intel? Share with our readers in the comments section.
